What drives pay in Yorkshire and the Humber
Jobs in Yorkshire and The Humber pay a median of £37,519, 8.3% below the UK, and output per hour worked was 12.1% below the UK average in 2023. As in the other northern regions, the shortfall is mostly at the top: the best-paid tenth start at £69,168, 16.3% under the UK, while the lowest-paid tenth are just 3.3% behind.
Making things matters more here than nationally. Manufacturing produces 13.1% of output against 8.9% for the UK and provides 10.2% of jobs against 7.1% across Great Britain, and energy supply is 2.7% of output against 2.0%. Drax Power Station near Selby, which says it generates about 5% of the UK's electricity, employs around 1,000 people. North East Lincolnshire, Rotherham and Kirklees sit at the bottom. Hull shows the commuter effect: jobs in the city pay £36,836 but its residents earn £33,552, while people living in the neighbouring East Riding earn £40,716, more than the £37,168 paid by jobs there.
What is changing: pay for jobs in the region rose 5.2% in 2026, the third biggest increase of the 12 after London and the North East. The economy grew more slowly, by 0.8% in real terms in 2024, and Hull and East Yorkshire was the only combined authority area in the ONS figures whose economy shrank, by 1.2%.
