How hourly pay converts to a salary

Multiply the hourly rate by your weekly hours, then by the weeks you are paid for in a year. With paid holidays that is all 52 weeks, so a 40-hour week comes to 2,080 paid hours, the same convention the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics uses to turn hourly wages into yearly ones (BLS OEWS FAQ):

    Yearly pay = hourly rate x hours a week x 52, and hourly rate = yearly pay ÷ (hours a week x 52)

A month is a twelfth of the year, so it isn't four weeks' pay: $25 an hour is $1,000 a week but $4,333 a month, because a year has 52 weeks rather than 48. If some time off is unpaid, take those weeks out: two unpaid weeks turn $25 an hour into $50,000 a year instead of $52,000.

Where the take-home and comparisons come from

    • Take-home pay uses the same 2026 tax engines as our salary pages: income tax and employee contributions for a single person with no other income, checked against hand-worked examples. Each country's assumptions are on the methodology page. In the US it is federal tax only; most states add their own income tax.
    • Minimum wage: each country's adult statutory minimum (in the US the federal $7.25, though many states set more). The UAE and Singapore have no general minimum wage.
    • The typical worker: the official median for full-time workers, the same figure as the "Is this a good salary here?" box on our salary pages. France, Singapore and the UAE don't publish one that compares like with like, so they show none.
    • Jobs that pay about this: the median hourly pay of the careers on Paygrade in that country, official where a statistics office publishes it, otherwise our estimate.

    Limits

This is a conversion, not a pay quote or tax advice. It leaves out overtime, shift premiums, bonuses, tips and benefits, and the take-home figure leaves out pension contributions, state and local taxes, and anything specific to your situation. In Spain pay usually comes in 14 payments a year, so a monthly payslip is a fourteenth of the yearly figure, not a twelfth.

    Questions

How do you convert an hourly wage to a yearly salary?

Multiply the hourly rate by the hours you work a week, then by 52. For a 40-hour week that is the hourly rate times 2,080, the convention BLS uses for its yearly wage figures: $25 an hour is $25 x 2,080 = $52,000 a year. If some weeks off are unpaid, multiply by the weeks you are paid for instead of 52.

How do you work out an hourly rate from a salary?

Divide the yearly salary by the hours you are paid for in a year: 2,080 for a 40-hour week, 1,950 for 37.5 hours. $60,000 a year is $60,000 / 2,080 = $28.85 an hour.

Why is my real hourly pay lower than this?

Salaried jobs often mean more than the contracted hours, and unpaid overtime lowers the true hourly rate. If you regularly work 45 hours on a salary set for 40, enter 45 hours to see your effective rate. Hourly workers paid overtime earn more than the base figure here, as overtime isn't included.
