Monaco’s minimum wage is €12.31 an hour gross from 1 June 2026 for workers aged 18 and over: €2,080.39 a month for a full-time, 39-hour week. On top of that, Monaco requires employers to add an allowance of 5%, which takes the minimum to about €12.93 an hour and €2,184.41 a month. The Monaco government publishes the rates in the Journal de Monaco each time they change.
How Monaco sets its minimum wage
Monaco doesn’t set a figure of its own. Its 1963 wage law says minimum pay must be at least equal to what is paid for the same work in the “neighbouring economic region” (Law No. 739, art. 11), and a ministerial order names that region as Nice, or failing that the Alpes-Maritimes (Order 63-131, art. 1). In practice that means the French minimum wage, the SMIC, so Monaco’s hourly rate changes whenever France’s does.
The same order then adds Monaco’s own twist: minimum pay is “increased by an exceptional allowance of 5% of its amount” (art. 2), and that allowance carries no social contributions. It applies to minimum pay set by the order, including the minimums in collective agreements for each trade.
The rates from 1 June 2026
| Age | An hour | A week (39 hours) | A month (169 hours) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 18 and over | €12.31 | €480.09 | €2,080.39 |
| 17 to 18 | €11.08 | €432.12 | €1,872.52 |
| 16 to 17 | €9.85 | €384.15 | €1,664.65 |
Overtime at the minimum rate (18 and over) is €15.39 an hour for the first eight hours above 39 (+25%) and €18.47 after that (+50%). All figures are gross and before the 5% allowance (Circular 2026-8). The 39-hour week is Monaco’s legal working week (Ordinance-Law No. 677, art. 1), four hours longer than France’s 35, which is why the monthly minimum in Monaco is higher than the French monthly SMIC of €1,867.02 even though the hourly rate is the same.
From 1 January to 31 May 2026 the rate was €12.02 an hour and €2,031.38 a month (Circular 2025-12), so the June rise was 2.4%. As of 28 October 2026 no later circular has been published.
What the minimum wage pays after deductions
Employees in Monaco pay no health contributions (the employer pays those) and, if they live in Monaco and aren’t French, no income tax. They do pay into the state pension (CAR), the top-up pension (CMRC) and French unemployment insurance. On the rates from 1 October 2026:
| Full-time minimum wage, a month | Amount |
|---|---|
| Gross pay (169 hours at €12.31) | €2,080.39 |
| CAR pension, 6.85% | -€142.51 |
| CMRC top-up pension, 4.008% | -€83.38 |
| Unemployment insurance, 2.40% | -€49.93 |
| 5% allowance (no contributions) | +€104.02 |
| Take-home pay | €1,908.59 |

How it compares
Monaco’s minimum is a floor, not the going rate: half of private-sector employees earned more than €3,475 a month gross in 2025, and fewer than 1% earned under €2,000 (IMSEE, full-time equivalent). See average salary in Monaco for pay by sector. For pay in France itself, where most people who work in Monaco live, see salaries in France.
Limits
The rates are the legal minimums for private-sector employees. Many collective agreements set higher minimums for their trade. The take-home example is ours, for a full-time employee with no other deductions; it isn’t a payslip.
Questions
What is the minimum wage in Monaco in 2026?
From 1 June 2026 it is €12.31 an hour gross for workers aged 18 and over, or €2,080.39 a month for Monaco's legal 39-hour week (169 hours a month). Employers must add an allowance of 5% of that amount, which takes it to about €12.93 an hour and €2,184.41 a month.
Is Monaco's minimum wage the same as the French SMIC?
The hourly rate is the same: Monaco's law ties its minimum to the neighbouring region, Nice and the Alpes-Maritimes, so the French SMIC of €12.31 applies. Two things differ: Monaco works out the monthly figure on 39 hours a week rather than France's 35, and adds a 5% allowance on top.
What is the minimum wage in Monaco after tax?
On our calculation from the Caisses Sociales de Monaco rates from 1 October 2026, a full-time worker on €2,080.39 pays €275.82 in pension and unemployment contributions, and the 5% allowance of €104.02 carries none, leaving about €1,908.59 a month. Monaco has no income tax for its residents, but workers who live in France, and French nationals, pay French income tax.
Does the 5% allowance count for social contributions?
No. Ministerial Order 63-131 says the 5% allowance does not give rise to the payments or deductions due under social legislation, so no pension, health or unemployment contributions are taken from it.
What is the minimum wage for under-18s in Monaco?
From 1 June 2026, €11.08 an hour for 17 to 18 year olds (€1,872.52 a month for 169 hours) and €9.85 an hour for 16 to 17 year olds (€1,664.65 a month), before the 5% allowance (Journal de Monaco, Circular 2026-8).
