Who needs a work permit
- British, EU, EEA and Swiss nationals: no work permit. You can start work and apply for residency at the same time, but “employment on its own does not give you the right to live in Gibraltar” (residency portal).
- Everyone else: a work permit, issued to the employer for a specific post, for up to 12 months, or up to 36 months where the Department of Employment decides it’s in the public interest and the job is in financial services, gaming or certain University of Gibraltar posts. The fee is £70 (renewal £36) from 1 August 2026, and your residency must be approved before you start. An employer who employs someone without a permit can get a £3,000 fixed penalty.
Every employer must register every vacancy with the Department of Employment before hiring, at least 10 days before the start date, and file a Notice of Terms of Engagement for every worker (Department of Employment).
Living there or commuting
To live in Gibraltar as an employee under the Residency Regulations 2026, you need a contract of at least a year paying at least the Gibraltar average (currently £37,500), a home bought or rented for at least 12 months, and to be 55 or under, unless an exemption applies. See Gibraltar residency. Many people instead live in Spain and cross each day: see frontier workers. For the costs of moving, see moving to Gibraltar.

Questions
How do I get a job in Gibraltar?
Apply to employers directly or through recruitment agencies. Every vacancy must be registered with the Department of Employment before the employer hires, at least 10 days before the start date. British, EU, EEA and Swiss nationals don't need a work permit; other nationals need one, applied for by the employer. If you want to live in Gibraltar rather than commute from Spain, you also need a residence permit.
Do I need a work permit to work in Gibraltar?
Not if you are a British, EU, EEA or Swiss national: you can start work and apply for residency at the same time. Other nationals need a work permit, issued to the employer for a specific post for up to 12 months (up to 36 months in financial services, gaming and some University of Gibraltar posts), and their residency must be approved before they start.
What jobs pay best in Gibraltar?
By industry, financial intermediation pays the most: full-time monthly-paid men averaged £6,684.46 a month in October 2025 and women £4,039.18. By occupation, managers and senior officials averaged £7,171.04 (men) and £5,169.84 (women). The lowest-paid industry is hotels and restaurants (Employment Survey Report 2025).
