What drives pay in Florida
Florida's economy runs on people arriving, as residents and as visitors, and that shapes its pay. The Legislature's Office of Economic and Demographic Research (EDR) calls population growth the state's primary engine of economic growth: Florida gained over 2.1 million net new residents in the six years after the 2020 Census, mostly through migration, and the office expects 145.8 million visitors in 2026-27. Real GDP grew 26.9% from 2019 to 2025, against 15.6% for the US (BEA).
That growth creates a lot of service work. Arts, entertainment, recreation, accommodation and food services made up 5.9% of GDP in 2025 (US 4.2%), while manufacturing was 4.8%, about half the US share. Retail salespersons are the most common job, 333,460 of them on a median of $34,010, and there are 207,180 waiters and waitresses on $36,150. The all-jobs median is $47,880, 6% below the US and 37th of the 50 states and DC.
The gap is closing, though. EDR says Florida's average annual wage was 87.3% of the US average in 2020 and 92.4% in 2025, and in 2025-26 the average wage rose 4.8% with virtually no growth in jobs. It expects wage growth of 3.5% in 2026-27 and then 4% or more a year for four years, with employment growth above 1% only once in that period, and concludes that the higher wages are likely here to stay. Unemployment was 4.6% in July 2026, above the US rate of 4.1%.
