What drives pay in New Hampshire

New Hampshire's pay comes from high-tech manufacturing and professional services. Computer and electronic products made up 2.6% of the state's GDP in 2025, two and a half times the US share, and paid 3.8% of all employee compensation (US 1.2%), according to BEA. The state's Department of Business and Economic Affairs counts more than 1,700 manufacturers employing over 67,000 people at an average salary of $83,500. Professional, scientific and technical services are 9.2% of GDP (US 8.0%), including computer systems design at 2.7% (US 1.8%), and the state has 10,840 software developers on a median of $139,720. The department credits the state's proximity to the Boston and New York technology centers and its low taxes; there is no state income tax on wages.

Pay is high at the bottom too, even though the minimum wage is the federal $7.25: only one worker in ten earns less than $33,030, against $31,200 nationally. Retail produces 7.0% of GDP (US 5.9%), and retail salespersons are the most common job, 23,880 of them on a median of $36,200, followed by general and operations managers on $124,680. The all-jobs median is $55,880, 10% above the US and 16th of the 50 states and DC, with prices about 4% above the US average, mostly because of housing.

The economy has grown faster than the nation's since 2019, with real GDP up 17.3% against 15.6%, led by professional and technical services, whose real output rose 62.6%. Growth slowed in 2025 to 1.7%, below the US rate of 2.3%.
