What drives pay in Oregon

Oregon depends on computer and electronics manufacturing more than any other state. Computer and electronic products made up 3.9% of its GDP in 2025, almost four times the US share and ahead of California, according to BEA. Management of companies, BEA's category for head offices, is 2.8% (US 1.8%), and wood products 0.9%, five times the US share. Software developers are one of the best-paid large occupations, 21,830 of them on a median of $142,720.

Health care also pays well here: registered nurses earn a median of $129,010 and home health and personal care aides $44,410, and health care and social assistance pays 14.2% of all employee compensation (US 12.0%). Finance and insurance is small, at 5.3% of GDP against 8.7% nationally. Under a regional minimum wage, now $15.55 in most of the state and $16.80 in the Portland area, only one worker in ten earns less than $35,680 (US $31,200). The median is $57,000, 12% above the US and 11th of the 50 states and DC, with prices about 3% above the US average.

The chip industry is shrinking locally even as demand grows. The state's Office of Economic Analysis reports that Oregon semiconductor and electronic product jobs fell 28% from January 2023 to June 2026, and that Oregon lost about 600 of them in the first half of 2026 while the US added about 4,100. The state has had year-over-year job losses through 2026, with unemployment steady at 5.2%, and the gains it has are concentrated in health care, which the office warns could pause with Medicaid cuts. Real GDP rose 10.4% from 2019 to 2025, against 15.6% nationally.
