What drives pay in South Carolina

South Carolina pairs a large factory sector with a fast-growing, lower-paid tourism and retail economy. Manufacturing produced 12.9% of the state's GDP in 2025 (US 9.5%), led by motor vehicles and parts (1.6%, against 0.6% nationally), plastics and rubber (1.2%, against 0.3%) and electrical equipment (1.0%, against 0.3%), according to BEA. Factory workers average $37.51 an hour, against $20.29 in leisure and hospitality, according to the state's Department of Employment and Workforce (DEW).

Factories are not the biggest employers, though. DEW counts health care first, with over 316,000 jobs in 2024, then retail with 268,000 and manufacturing with 263,000. Retail salespersons, fast food workers and cashiers are three of the four most common jobs, with medians between $27,520 and $30,690, and the state's 47,200 waiters and waitresses earn $18,370. With no state minimum wage above the federal $7.25, one worker in ten earns less than $27,070 (US $31,200), while finance (5.2% of GDP, against 8.7%) and professional services (6.4%, against 8.0%) are smaller than nationally. The median is $46,490, 9% below the US and 45th of the 50 states and DC, with prices about 6% below average.

The economy is growing fast. Real GDP rose 20.2% from 2019 to 2025 and 3.3% in 2025, both well ahead of the US, and DEW counted 55,200 more jobs in September 2026 than a year earlier, 17,100 of them in leisure and hospitality. Pay has lagged that growth: DEW finds private hourly earnings rose $10.45 from January 2015 to January 2025, but only $1.95 after inflation.
