What drives pay in Arizona

Arizona's pay sits near the US middle because most of its jobs are in services that pay mid-range wages, topped by a few high-tech and mining niches. Retail produced 7.2% of the state's GDP in 2025 (US 5.9%), construction 6.3% (US 4.3%) and administrative and support services, which include call centers, 3.7% (US 2.7%), according to BEA. Customer service representatives are the third most common job, 87,020 of them on a median of $45,690.

Manufacturing is smaller than nationally, 7.4% of GDP against 9.5%, but leans to high-value work: computer and electronic products are 1.6% of GDP (US 1.0%) and other transportation equipment, which includes aerospace, 1.8% (US 0.65%). TSMC says its Phoenix chip plant has been in volume production since late 2024 and employs more than 3,000 people. Arizona also mines about 70% of US copper (USGS).

The result is a median of $50,060, 2% below the US and 25th of the 50 states and DC, with a narrower spread than the nation. Only one worker in ten earns less than $34,190 (US $31,200), under a $15.15 state minimum wage, while the 90th percentile, $120,180, is below the US figure of $128,560.

Growth has been strong but is slowing. Real GDP rose 25.6% from 2019 to 2025, against 15.6% for the US, yet only 1.5% in 2025. The University of Arizona's forecasters expect job growth of 0.7% in 2026 and 1.0% in 2027, slow by the state's standards, led by health care and education and by professional and business services, while government, hospitality, finance and manufacturing shed jobs. Per capita income was 89.6% of the US average in early 2026.
