What drives pay in Utah

Utah has one of the fastest-growing economies in the country, and its pay reflects a fast-building, tech-heavy workforce. Real GDP rose 26.1% from 2019 to 2025, the fourth-fastest of the 50 states and DC and well ahead of the US at 15.6%, and construction made up 7.8% of GDP in 2025, almost twice the US share of 4.3% (BEA). Banking and credit were 7.6% (US 4.0%) and publishing, which includes software, 2.6% (US 1.6%). Software developers are the sixth most common job in the state, 31,940 of them on a median of $128,810.

The largest employers are mostly in health, education and government. The state's 2026 Economic Report to the Governor, using Department of Workforce Services data, lists Intermountain Health Care, the University of Utah, the State of Utah and Walmart as each employing 20,000 or more people in 2024, followed by Brigham Young University, Hill Air Force Base and Northrop Grumman.

Household income tells a different story: the median household earns $95,166 (Census), well above the US figure of $80,734, and Utah's households are the largest of any state, 2.91 people on average against 2.49.

Growth is slowing, though. The report estimates job growth of 1.5% in 2025, half the state's long-term median, with education and health services providing over a third of new jobs. Unemployment was 3.3%, and average annual wages rose 3.2%, slightly ahead of inflation at 2.7%.
