What drives pay in Wyoming

Wyoming's economy is built on energy and minerals. Mining, oil and gas produced 11.6% of the state's GDP in 2025, nine times the US share, with oil and gas at 4.9% and other mining, which includes coal, at 4.4%, according to BEA. Rail transportation (2.8%, against 0.2% nationally) and pipelines (2.4%, against 0.2%) are also far larger than in the US as a whole.

Mining pays the most. The Department of Workforce Services puts its average annual wage at $109,807 in 2025, against $63,501 across all industries and $29,520 in leisure and hospitality. But mining employs only about 15,500 people, and government is a bigger paymaster: state and local government pays 20.4% of all employee compensation, against 12.7% nationally. Office industries are small, with professional and technical services at 4.2% of GDP and finance and insurance at 3.9%, so the 90th percentile is $104,190, against $128,560 for the US. With a $7.25 minimum wage, one worker in ten earns less than $28,870 (US $31,200). The median is $50,270, 1% below the US and 22nd of the 50 states and DC, with prices about 7% below average.

Mining jobs are shrinking: 15,490 in 2025, down from 23,860 in 2015, with coal mining losing 7.2% of its jobs in 2025 alone. Total employment was flat in 2025 and fell year on year in the last two quarters, the first declines since 2021, while unemployment rose from 3.1% to 3.4%. Real GDP grew only 0.1% in 2025 and 4.1% from 2019 to 2025, against 15.6% nationally. The department projects more than 6,000 new jobs from 2025 to 2027, in most industries but not mining.
